Not So Modern Marvels

A couple of weeks ago we spent the weekend near Pittsburgh.  The main purpose was to shoot Carrie Furnace, but on the second day we had a smaller meetup at the W.A. Young & Sons Machine Shop.   This century old machine shop and foundry is just like it was when the doors closed in 1965.  Inside are 25 fully functional belt driven machines.   I was thinking that it must have been noisy with all these machines in operation, but when the caretaker fired up the old flathead engine that powers the drive belt system it was surprisingly quiet.

The photo above was just one of the many I took during our 3 hour visit.   I processed this one with the new Perfect Photo Suite from OnOne Software.  I’m pretty impressed with my first look at the new version of Perfect Photo Suite and one nice feature is that you do not have to use the suite from within Photoshop.  So users that don’t have Photoshop can still use this powerful suite of tools.   A 30 day trial version is available.

We are making plans to return to Carrie Furnace and W.A. Young & Sons next May.  Join our meetup group if you want to be notified when the dates are confirmed.

Black Friday Sales, Discounts, Video Tutorials and More!

RRPT would like to announce the launch of a couple of new pages on our website!

In time for Black Friday sales, we are launching our Software/Gear page. This page contains links to the software and gear companies that we find to be invaluable to our creative processes, from hardware that enhances our ability to create images in camera, to software and textures that enhance our images during post-process. Its all here. Many of these fine companies are offering Black Friday deals. If you are not able to take advantage of these sales, don’t fear, as RRPT has established affiliate relationships with a number of them, so that we can bring our participants and friends discounts all year long.

So check out RRPT’s Software/Gear page for a little early holiday shopping!!

RRPT would also like to announce a new Tutorials/Workshop page. This page features both video tutorials and personalized photo processing workshops! Get ready to take your photography to the next level by learning the tricks and tips on Lightroom, Aperture, Photoshop, Photomatix, and other software tools! As we are building our library of video tutorials, check back regularly for new launches. We are currently featuring videos on Importing Images into Lightroom (great for beginners and folks new to the Lightroom platform) and Merging Images in Photoshop HDR pro and editing in Adobe Camera Raw (great for all levels of photographers, who bracket images, but are new to the HDR process).

For photographers who perform hand-on training or have particular images they wish to develop, the Personalized Photo Processing Workshops, may be the way to go. If you are local, we will set up a time to get together and work on the skill areas you specifically want to improve, on your images, so that you can learn by doing! If you are out of this area, but have some questions or areas of photo processing on which you need help, use our contact page and let us know. We will work on developing video tutorials to meet your need!

Carrie Furnace Meetup

This past weekend, RRPT held a Meetup at Carrie Furnace… its not the first Meetup to ever be held in this amazing location, but it is the first to have night access. The surreal landscape of this place gave our great group of photographers some amazing opportunities (both day and night)… here are a couple of images from the evening’s adventures in light. The Carrie Furnace is one of the locations being preserved by the Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area. For more information on their mission, click here.

RRPT is in the process of scheduling another afternoon and evening Meetup. We are looking at May 2014. For more information, join our Meetup group… click here.

Cape May

RRPT just finished up our Photo Tour of Cape May, New Jersey and what a great group and incredible time we had!

At first blush our weather looked unappealing, but as photographers know, bad weather equals opportunity for amazing skies and we were not disappointed. The sunrises and sunsets were spectacularly beautiful.

We worked on long exposure techniques creating smooth oceans and cloud movement.

We hit the Pumpkin Run Car Show for some street rods.

We played with fire.

For those interested to see how this image was created, here is a video demonstrating Jeff J. spinning wool.

Spinning Wool

This was my first time visiting Cape May and I am ready to go back. In fact, we have added Cape May to our 2014 Photo Tour schedule!
