For this trip, Road Runner Photography Tours is excited to announce we will be teaming up with renowned photographer Hector Astorga! Hector is an award-winning professional wildlife photographer based in South Texas.  His achievements include being a six-time Grand Prize winner of the Wildlife in Focus and Valley Land Fund Photography competitions, winning top honors in the 2009 National Wildlife Federation Photography Contest and in the 2012 Rocky Mountain Outdoor Writers and Photographers Photography competition, having an image selected as 2016 “Best of Show” by the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) in their Annual Showcase competition, and having his image of a Three-toed Sloth w/ baby win the prestigious Nature’s Best Windland Smith Rice International Awards Wildlife Category in 2019. His work has also been featured in Nature’s Best Magazine, Audubon Magazine, National Wildlife Federation Magazine, Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine, National Geographic Guide Books, Ranger Rick Magazine, The Chicago Tribune, Quail Unlimited, and other national and regional publications.

Itinerary – Subject to Change

COSTA RICA   – 10    DAY PHOTOGRAPHY TOUR

Day 1. Transfer In. San Jose Airport -Hotel.

Our private transportation will take you to your Hotel in San Jose. Overnight at San Jose.

Day 2. San Jose – Boca Tapada Located in the Northern Lowlands between Ciudad Quesada and the Nicaragua border, Boca Tapada is far from the beaten tourist path. This is an area that true eco-tourists embrace for its natural beauty and tranquility. We will see: Honey creepers, parrots toucans, tanagers, and more. This is an amazing destination that literally can guarantee all these beautiful birds. Our day will start with an early breakfast at our hotel; followed by a bus ride to the lowlands of the Caribbean side of CR. On the way we will stop at a mid-elevation area for an amazing hummingbird in flight session. Lunch will be served at this photo location. After we finish, we will continue our bus ride will take us throughout the countryside and farming areas. Overnight at our lodge in Boca Tapada. All meals and entrances are included. 

Day 3. Boca Tapada full day.    

Today we will have a full day shooting tropical bird, mid-morning one half of the group will have an amazing Snakes photo session. In the afternoon we will continue with the toucans, tanagers, etc. At night we will enjoy a delicious dinner, and right after dinner the other half of the group will go to shoot Bats in flight. All meals and entrances are included.

Day 4. Boca Tapada full day.

Today we will have a full day shooting tropical bird, mid-morning one half of the group will have an amazing Snakes photo session. Day 5. Boca Tapada – Sarapiquí.

Right after breakfast we will depart to Cope’s place, we will have a visit to a little Rainforest area looking for some birds and amazing bats, then we will spend the afternoon at his setup place where we will photograph some new birds including 4-6 new hummingbird species. Overnight at our lodge in Sarapiqui. All meals and entrances are included.

Day 6.  Sarapiquí – Talamanca Area

(Highlands of Costa Rica, highland birds, hummingbirds and Quetzals) It is time to change destinations to the Cloud Forest of Costa Rica. This area will offer a completely new variety of species and photo opportunities. Here we will photograph beautiful hummingbirds to the amazing Quetzal. On the way we will stop at frogs’ heavens for a macro photo session of frogs. There will be no less than 6-8 different types of frogs in their natural habitat with a controlled environment for photography. You will see the famous “Red-eyed Leaf-frog” to the little “Glass frogs” whose bodies are transparent. For those who don’t have a macro lens, we will work also with compositions using the flowers and different elements that we will find at this amazing place. Overnight at our lodge in Cerro de la      Muerte. All meals and entrances are included.

Day 7. Talamanca area full day.

Everyone will be ready for another photography adventure! This time our morning starts with the Famous Quetzal Quest. We will spend the entire morning looking for and shooting the amazing Resplendent Quetzal. In the afternoon there will be one more session      of hummingbirds in flight and highland bird photography to complete our final photography day in Costa Rica. Overnight at the same photography location. All meals and entrances are included.

Day 8. Talamanca – Tarcoles area.

Time to move to a new destination, today we will go from the highlands to the lowlands of the Pacific side. But before leaving we will have the last hummingbirds in flight session, this time at the highlands with new hummer species. Lunch will be served at the lodge and we will depart right after in order to arrive late afternoon to our new location. Overnight at our Tarcoles Lodge. All meals and entrances are included.

Day 9. Full day, Owls and other species.

Today we will spend the entire day out of the Lodge. Early morning we will get ready to continue shooting, this time we will take a boat that will take us along the Tarcoles River looking for birds such as Boat-billed Herons, Caracaras, Lapwings, etc. there is also a good population of American Crocodiles giving us a great opportunity to photograph them as well. Later we might get many different species from the Tropical dry forest, plus some other species like the Lesser-ground Cuckoo, puff birds, and others. Overnight at our Tarcoles Lodge. All meals and entrances are included.

Day 10. Tarcoles area – San Jose International Airport.

A private transfer will take you to the international airport. Driving time 1 hour. Included meal -breakfast only. Return home.

 

Not included:

  • Airfare to and from Costa Rica.  
  • Visas, if applicable. US nationals do not require an entry visa to Costa Rica. However, they must have a current valid passport and a return ticket to exit Costa Rica within 90 days. US passport must be valid for a minimum of one day from the day you enter Costa Rica. As a tourist US nationals cannot stay more than 90 days.
  • Local airport taxes

  • Excess baggage charges.
  • Laundry charges and items of personal nature.
  • Meals not noted in the itinerary, soft drinks, alcoholic drinks , items of personal nature, as well as gratuities of any kind.

Payment Schedule:

  • $1000 deposit required at time of registration.
  • $2500 payment is due on or before August 31, 2020.
  • Balance is due no later than January 20, 2021.

After January 20, 2021, all payments are non-refundable.
