Frequently Asked Questions

Am I experienced enough to join one of your photo workshops?

Our workshops are perfect for photographers of all experience levels. Some participants are experienced and simply want to be guided to the best locations at the right time for the best shots. Others are new to photography and seek guidance on maximizing their gear and skills. We offer great locations, expert guidance, and assistance as needed.

Will transportation be provided?

For international workshops, transportation, other than airport transfers is generally provided. See individual workshop descriptions for specific information. For domestic workshops, unless otherwise noted, transportation is typically the responsibility of each participant. Once we reach the domestic workshop location, we encourage ride-sharing, especially since parking can be limited in some areas.

Will the workshop leaders be shooting during the workshop?

Yes, our workshop leaders often shoot alongside participants. This allows us to demonstrate techniques and show instant results. However, our main goal is to ensure you have a great experience and return home with photos you’re proud of. We’re always available to assist with any questions along the way.

How will weather affect our workshop?

Weather can be unpredictable, but it often provides great opportunities for dramatic skies and unique effects. If weather conditions are dangerous or make shooting impossible, we’ll pause the workshop until conditions improve. During downtime, we can assist with image critiques or processing questions. We do not offer refunds due to weather.

Will there be classroom time?

Our workshops are designed to focus on learning in the field, though if weather prevents outdoor shooting, we may provide some indoor learning activities.

Is lodging included?

Unless specified, participants are responsible for booking their own accommodations. We typically reserve a block of rooms for the group, ensuring everyone can stay in the same location. For international workshop, lodging is generally included, and we’ll communicate this in the workshop details. When lodging is the responsibility of the participant, we will assist in the booking to ensure proper locations/dates/etc.

What should I wear and bring?

As each of our workshop locations is different, we will provide specific information on how to pack. In generally, be prepared for varying weather conditions, especially in higher elevations or early mornings/late evenings. We recommend dressing in layers and bringing rain and wind-resistant gear. For comfort and safety, reliable hiking boots are suggested. If necessary, additional gear like waders may be specified in workshop notes that are provided once the deposit on registration is received.

What camera gear should I bring?

We’ll provide a recommended gear list for each workshop. Generally, bring your preferred lenses, extra camera body, memory cards, remote trigger, extra batteries, and a charger. If the workshop is longer, consider bringing a laptop and card reader to back up your images.

Can I bring a non-photographer companion?

This depends on workshop availability and space. For workshops with limited space, non-photographers may need to register as participants. We generally limit the number of workshop spots to ensure personalized attention for each participant. When non-photographers do join our workshops, we work to make sure they have a wonderful experience as well; from helping them to enjoy cultural experiences to relaxing with a good book. Also, non-photographers are always welcome to join the group for meals or even out in the field, should they desire.

Are deposits required?

Yes, each workshop requires a commitment represented by a deposit. This allows us to remit deposits to our lodgings, facilitators, and when applicable, local guides to ensure their time is reserved for our group. Each workshop has its own unique deposit, which will be mentioned in the workshop description.

When is full payment due?

For one-day or weekend workshops, full payment is due at registration. For multi-day workshops, full payment is due 60 days before departure, generally split in to the deposit and two subsequent payments. However, we are happy to work with our guests to ensure that payment of registration is not a burden. Participants just need to communicate. If payment is not received by the due date, we may charge the credit card on file or cancel the reservation for check payments.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancellations must be made in writing. We recommend purchasing trip insurance for unforeseen events. Specific cancellation policies are provided for multi-day workshops.

Under what circumstances might Road Runner Photography Tours cancel a workshops?

We reserve the right to cancel workshops if the minimum number of participants isn’t met or due to unforeseen circumstances. If a workshop is canceled, participants can either reschedule or receive a partial or full refund as noted on each workshop page. We are not responsible for costs incurred (e.g., lodging, airfare), and recommend purchasing trip insurance.

How do I pay for my registration?

Our preferred payment methods are via check or Zelle. This allows us to minimize the fees charged for payment. However, if the participant prefers to use PayPal or credit card, we can accommodate this need, with an added service fee of 4.5%.
